General entry requirements

Introduction

As an international student we know you have made a big decision to choose to study at Dublin City University (DCU).  DCU is one of the best young universities in the world as evidenced by our consistent ranking in the Times Higher Education Top 100 Under 50. You will gain great work and life experience as many of our degrees include an internship or research project with industry. The sooner you apply, the easier you will find the application process. You need to meet entry requirements, and an early offer will help with your visa application (if needed) and planning time for moving away from home.

English Language Entry Requirements

IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 or above, with no less than 6.0 in any one skill. DCU Business School additionally requires 6.5 in speaking and writing.

TOEFL: Total Score of 92. DCU Business School additionally requires all section scores 21 or above.

PTE Academic: Overall score of 63 with no less than a score of 59 in any component. DCU Business School additionally requires 63 in speaking and writing.

Your English language certificate must be awarded  within two years of the start date of your DCU programme.

Foundation – Undergraduate and Postgraduate 

We offer a Foundation Programme at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Masters level. The programme can be one year or one semester in duration, depending on your level of English. You will benefit from the International Foundation Programme if you have:

Met your country’s specific academic entry requirements

Have an IELTS of 5.5 with no less than 5.0 in any one skill (year long programme required) or IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any one skill (semester long programme required)

You are guaranteed progression to your chosen degree once you successfully complete the programme. 

If you need to improve your English before entering DCU, we have a variety of English language programmes to choose from.

Undergraduate

You can directly enter Year 1 if you have studied in one of the following:

GCSE A levels – you must have 4 A levels or 3 A levels + 1 AS level in different subjects from the same year or preceding year only

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma – Mathematics and English must have been studied. Maths Studies is not accepted where programmes have specific Maths entry requirements or have an equivalent qualification

You must meet specific subject entry requirements, where required, e.g. Mathematics or a Science subject at a specific grade.

Apply to DCU by 1 July deadline. 

Transfer appliants 

You must apply by 1 July deadline if you wish to transfer to DCU. In addition to the standard documentation for your application, you must include your semester sheets, programme outline and module/subject descriptions. Typically, we consider transfer requesta to year 2 of a four-year programme. We generally do not accept transfers into Year 3 of a four-year programme as most programmes have an INTRA work placement. It is not possible to transfer to final year.

Masters Program

Typically, you need a Bachelor’s degree from a good University with a minimum of a 2.1 or GPA of 3 out of 4 or GPA 4 out of 5. 

Other Entry Requirements: Please note that some programmes will have different/additional entry requirements (e.g. interview, sample piece of writing).

Research and PhD

You can apply at any time to be a researcher at DCU; there are no closing dates.   

Master’s degree by Research: Honours Bachelor degree with a high grade.
PhD-track: taught Master’s degree or an Honours Bachelor degree with a high grade.
PhD: Candidates must hold a Master’s degree by Research
